THE GRANDMOTHER - TEXTUAL ANALYSIS

THE GRANDMOTHER - TEXTUAL ANALYSIS

In The Grandmother, the director: David Lynchwants the spectator to see how alone and trapped people can be without the affection of a loved one. Lynch presents this very effectively in one of the scenes, as he uses cinematography and mise-en-scene to fully capture the lack of love the boy is receiving. The boy is dressed in striped pyjamas which could indicate how he feels as though he is trapped in a prison and cannot let out any emotion otherwise, he will be beaten again. Once he goes to sleep the grandmother calls for him as we now see a close-up of the boy smiling with excitement. This close-up of the boy’s physical attributes gives more involvement for the spectator as we can intricatelysee a rapid change in emotion, which gives the boy’s emotion more meaning. This swift transition from a dark tone to a brighter and more cheerful tone, gives the spectator a feeling of warmth and comfort as the boy is now receiving love from his grandmother which ultimately lifts his mood. This helps the spectator to understand how David Lynch wants to underline the importance of receiving love, as it affects everyone dearly and brings more meaning into people’s lives.

  1. "the director: David Lynch" - capitalise film titles. You don't need to capitalise names.
