THE STAR / STAR IMAGE

The star consits of three component parts:
The real person, The 'reel' person, The star's persona

The star-image has four parts:
What the industry puts out, what the media says, what the star says or does, what we say.

Stars can mean different things to different people.
Overall stars might be considered 'intertextual' - a cluster of meanings and parts, often referencing one another.

STARS MAY BE CONSIDERED:
As a deviant - controlled by studio.
As a cultural value/sign/fetish.
As an object of star-gazing.

METHOD ACTING
Robert de Niro
Christian Bale
Daniel Day Lewis

In which the actor lives in their role.

Stars sell films; they can also help secure financial backing to get a project off the ground. Films are also vehicles for stars, allowing them to demonstrate a wide range of skills across different genres. There is an element of symbiosis in this relationship.

Non-verbal communication
-Can be as important as verbal communication.
-Often used in conjunction with other micro features to generate meaning - e.g. with use of CU or BCU, or through the Kuleshov effect.
-Link with film of the silent era, Chaplin - in cinema of the far east (Japan, China), which have strong traditions of mime in theatre, non-verbal communication is endemic in performance.
