THE GUNFIGHTER (2014 - ERIC KISSACK) - TEXTUAL ANALYSIS

THE GUNFIGHTER

Kissack uses elements of traditional western films however utilises the voiceover to mock these 'traditions'. There are traditional non-diegetic sounds of violins and trumpets which indicate to the spectator the genre this short film is set in. All the characters are in 'western clothing' which include: cowboy hats, and revolvers. This adds to the irony of the characters as they all want to look 'nice' and threatening but the voice-over contradicts them. Throughout this short film, Kissack shows how society and our relationships would be different if people did not suppress their views. Through the use of close ups of the different characters, the spectator feels involved as they would understand their emotions clearly and how they felt in their current 'society'. This brings meaning to the different thoughts of the characters, as we can see very clearly what feeling they each want to express towards each other. Kissack wanted to show how in society, one small bad thing can affect everyone as the editing shows how that bad thing spreads around everyone as they all shoot each other.

  1. "they all want to look 'nice' and threatening" - why nice? This is a bit of a weak word. Not 100% sure why it's in inverted commas.
For this type of short film analysis, which is linked to the NEA, you should be thinking about aesthetic qualities, and the type of influences you might draw from them, so spectator response is really important.
